Modern-Classical in Bruges

18th April 2024

Such a challenging project, a 16th Century sprawling residence in historic Bruges, Belgium, has been successfully restored and modernised by architect Simon de Burbure. The house was in dire need of care, not being updated since the 1880s.

The success though of this home is the craftsmanship and attention to detail – the cornicing expertly repaired over 2 years – whilst simultaneously creating the epitome of modern luxury.

Curves abound, every material invites you to linger and caress. The marble baths are pretty amazing and the stillness and calm of pool makes you wonder if you would want to disturb the water’s perfect glistening surface.

I would love to see how a family would live in it, how it would soften with the human touch. However now, gazing at one beautiful room after another, the home has a timeless feel, and it’s clear that the work these artisans have carried out will be standing for hundreds of years to come.
