Say Hi

Smile Pouf

Well, it does make me smile! The Smile pouf is a compact occasional seat designed to be moved easily with one hand. Its ash frame rises into a curved handle that also works as a backrest, giving the piece both its name and its cheerful character.

The Smile was created by Italian design duo Maurizio Marconato and Terry Zappa for Porada. The pair studied architecture together in Milan and have collaborated on furniture and interior projects for decades, which perhaps explains how neatly the frame combines structure, handle and backrest in one flowing shape.

Porada is known for occasional furniture that makes beautiful use of wood, and the Smile fits naturally into its collection. The solid ash frame is available in a range of finishes, while the softly rounded seat can be upholstered in different fabrics or leathers. There is also a choice of fixed or swivel base.

It is a simple idea, but a rather clever one. The handle makes the pouf genuinely easy to move, while the gentle curve and contrasting materials give it far more personality than the average occasional seat. Practical, beautifully made and just playful enough, perhaps it has the makings of a future design classic?
