Electric Giants

17th March 2026

In a bid to help the Austrian public be more accepting of power pylons, their national grid teamed up with GP designpartners and BauCon to create these ‘power giants’.

These massive structures look more like public art that infrastructure, but that’s the point. The concept is to match each state with an animal; like the stag, the symbol for the woodland hills of the Alps and the stork for Burgenland which is often populated by the striking bird.

They have caught the attention of the design world, Austria’s Power Giants have won a Red Dot award for concept design.

Austria needs to expand their grid network, with a keener reliance on electric energy, it remains to be seen if these massive animals will harmonise with nature, as is the intension, or vie for attention fighting against the stunning natural landscape.

They will definitely make car journey eye-spy more fun!
