The Pickle Newsletter
Original illustration, design history and studio stories, sent once a month from Cornwall.
Each edition begins with something that has caught our eye. It might be a piece of jewellery, a chair, a typeface, a building or an everyday object with an unusually good story. We look at how it was made, why it looks the way it does and what designers can still learn from it.
Alongside this, we share recent Pickle projects, new illustration and occasional discoveries from the studio. The result is a visual letter about the things that interest us and influence our work.

Anatomy of Style
Our 2026 series takes individual objects apart visually, looking closely at the decisions that give each one its character.
This Art Nouveau hairpin, designed by Charles Desrosiers and made by Georges Fouquet in about 1906, is explored through its stylised carnations, sinuous asymmetry, materials and making.
Each newsletter goes beyond the finished image, adding historical context, related objects and the people behind the design. The visual study then becomes the artwork for that month’s Pickle Calendar.

Design Classics
For several years, our newsletters explored familiar objects that had earned a place in design history. The series ranged from the Anglepoise lamp and Olivetti Valentine to Converse All Stars, Chanel No. 5 and the Moka Pot.
In 2025, many of those stories returned as our Design Classics calendar. New illustrations and infographics expanded the original research, finding fresh details in objects we thought we already knew.
The Moka Pot is a good example: a modest kitchen object with a distinctive form, an ingenious history and far more curious detail than its size suggests.

Add a little Italian to your kitchen
Our first Moka Pot feature combined original illustration, design history and news from the Pickle studio. Nearly a decade later, the same subject returned as a Design Classics infographic and calendar artwork.
That thread through the archive is part of what makes the newsletter more than a monthly update. It is an ongoing collection of visual stories, revisited and developed as new ideas emerge.
